NAN GOLDIN

The iconic American photographer shares stories through intimate snapshots full of truth and raw spontaneity.

Nan Goldin (USA, 1953) has exhibited her photographs in distinguished institutions like the Louvre, the MoMA, Tate Modern, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and Whitechapel Gallery, among others. In her work, Goldin dives into the queer culture, where she takes pictures of drag queens as she follows them around, of lovers as she turns us into voyeurs, of her friends, etc. Candid photographs that capture the most personal instants. Sometimes she portraits herself, but most of the time is others she captures with her lens.

In this selection of works, we spot some that belong to The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, a slideshow at the Museum of Modern Art, Jun 11, 2016–Apr 16, 2017. Examples are Nan and Brian in Bed, New York City, 1983, Philippe H. and Suzanne Kissing at Euthanasia, New York City, 1981, and Trixie on the Cot, New York City, 1979, among others. On many occasions, Goldin has described her work as a sort of window into her world, a way of knowing more about her, a diary she presents to the spectator. Nan Goldin got her highest auction result in 2002, 250.000 USD at Christie's with the work Thanksgiving.

Her photography combines delirium, madness, recklessness, euphoria, pleasure, rapport, despair, torment, dolor, and melancholy.
